Today's Federated Church was established in 1785. For over 200 years, the church has been in the Skowhegan area in some form. The church was originally a Baptist church, and became a Federated church in 1919 by merging with the Island Avenue Congregational Church.
The Federated Church is presently a very active church with junior and senior youth groups, a very active bible study group. There are both men's and women's organization within the church. The Sunday School is well attended, and the church is involved with a summer camp. A choir and other music enhance the spiritual ambiance of the church.
The church has wonderful stained glass windows and is a most warm and welcoming church. We worship God the Creator who has put us all together and leads us on this incredible journey. Come visit us and join us in our worship.
I want to welcome you to the Skowhegan Federated Church Web Page. My name is Reverend Mark K. Tanner. I have ministered here for 17 years.
I was raised on the South Shore of Massachusetts and received my B.S Degree in Psychology from Bridgewater State College. I attended Bangor Theological Seminary and graduated with my Masters of Divinity degree in 1993. Upon graduation I served as chaplain of Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia until December of 1994.
In 1995 I accepted the call to serve in Skowhegan.
My wife, Deb and I, are blessed to have five wonderful children; Aly and her boyfriend, Matt, James and his fiancé, Cortney, Josh and his wife, Sarie, Kaley and Luke. We also have two beautiful grandchildren, Mariah and Jacoby. We love this community and the many opportunities for ministry in the surrounding area.
Our church is filled with people from all walks of life. We believe in the hope and love given to us by Jesus Christ. It is our hope that through an active ministry involving people of all ages we can spread the love of Christ to folks in the Somerset County area and beyond. Please come and join us. All are welcome.
